THE RULES

What is Pot-Limit Omaha?

Make the best high hand using exactly two private cards and exactly three community cards, or win uncontested.

Omaha became a widely offered community-card alternative to Hold'em; published room rules provide the mechanics used here.

Dealer, forced bets & starting cards

A rotating button and two blinds establish position. Four downcards are dealt to each player before preflop action.

Forced bets: Small blind and big blind. Deck: Standard 52-card deck.

Betting rounds & legal actions

Betting schedule: 4. When action reaches you, fold, check if no bet is pending, bet, call, or raise within the table's betting limits. An all-in wager is possible when your remaining stack is smaller than a full bet; side pots can result.

Betting limits: Pot-limit. Always confirm the posted stake and raise rules before play.

Showdown & pot award

Exactly two hole cards plus exactly three board cards make the five-card hand. The highest standard hand wins; ties split.

WORKED EXAMPLE

See the rule at the table.

You hold A♠ K♠ Q♦ J♦. The board is 2♠ 5♠ 8♠ 9♥ 10♣. You have only two spades in hand and must use three board cards, so A♠ K♠ plus 2♠ 5♠ 8♠ makes an ace-high flush.

The mistake to avoid

Reading a four-card flush on the board as your flush when you hold only one matching hole card. Omaha always requires exactly two hole cards.

A sound starting approach

Connected, suited starting cards work together better than four isolated high cards. Evaluate redraws and blockers; a strong flop hand may be vulnerable by the river.

Venue and format variations

Omaha high may also be offered at fixed or no limit, but this page describes pot-limit betting. Maximum raises depend on the pot after a call; software and house rules govern exact accounting.

Game mechanics, tournament procedures, and local house rules are different layers. Poker TDA publishes tournament procedures; the table operator's posted game rules decide the exact version you play.
