THE RULES

What is Five-Card Draw?

Make the best five-card high hand after one draw or win when opponents fold.

Five-Card Draw is an established home-game and casino variant with a simpler dealing structure than community-card games.

Dealer, forced bets & starting cards

Each player receives five cards down. After the first betting round, players may discard selected cards and receive replacements; then a final betting round occurs.

Forced bets: Blinds in the cited online room; some home games use antes. Deck: Standard 52-card deck.

Betting rounds & legal actions

Betting schedule: 2 betting rounds, 1 draw. When action reaches you, fold, check if no bet is pending, bet, call, or raise within the table's betting limits. An all-in wager is possible when your remaining stack is smaller than a full bet; side pots can result.

Betting limits: Fixed-limit, pot-limit, or no-limit by table. Always confirm the posted stake and raise rules before play.

Showdown & pot award

The best standard five-card high hand wins. There are no board cards and no requirement to expose a hand if all opponents fold.

WORKED EXAMPLE

See the rule at the table.

Holding A♠ A♦ 9♣ 6♥ 3♠, you discard 9-6-3 and draw three new cards while keeping the pair of aces.

The mistake to avoid

Assuming a draw is compulsory. Standing pat is allowed, and the number of cards drawn can reveal information.

A sound starting approach

Start with pairs and made hands appropriate to the table. Watch draw counts and avoid turning a solid made hand into an unnecessarily weak draw.

Venue and format variations

Forced bets, maximum draw counts, and whether the game uses limit or no-limit betting are house rules to check.

Game mechanics, tournament procedures, and local house rules are different layers. Poker TDA publishes tournament procedures; the table operator's posted game rules decide the exact version you play.
